Truth be told there is a lot of derivative young groups out their that think their elementary approach to an incredibly complex music style is passable to the generally public. It's in rare moments when i see a young group with a lot of promise maybe not trying to re-invent anything but doing some things very right and clearly having some fun doing so. Orlando Thillet and Court Ferguson's duo "Cheek's" from Denver (by way of Florida) seem to be on the right track with what is their first track. It's not over the top and has a good grasp of melody while it winds in and out of passages. Id say these guys are ones to be on the lookout for and hopefully they dont lose precious steam. Side note...I feel that a lot of people care about a jetpack. Cheeks |

Pilgrimage - EP (2013)
Solid state four piece from sunny Florida. I say sunny because in upstate New York we are still in the throws of this death winter, such is life.
Pilgrimage melt genres like a 3 cheese pizza of deliciousness. Structure wise and pacing goes to post-rock. math rock and post hardcore sensibilities round this beauty out. Not overly technical but certainly no slouching here and theres a fair bit of twists and turns to keep your brain alert for predators. Vocals make their presence known and are generally powerful and add a powerful dynamic to the proceedings.
The influences on the shoulder are many but its clearly well loved and cared for by these gentlemen. Worth a gander to be sure.

Kit Fisto - II (2011)
Math Rock can be taken in more directions than one would think. Not to say that this particular brand gets snubbed but the straight up party math rock tends to be made to DD the night of the big shindig. Kit Fisto exist in a realm where metal, alternative rock and tap happy math pump their collective fists in the air. The sense of enjoyment from these guys is just extremely in your face. Did I mention their from Florida? Sounds about right. Whenever I listen to them I half expect them to break into some Chon style riffage and at times they come close however they always reign it back in. If these guys can harness more of whats going on in these three songs, up the very welcome vocals that sneak their way in, possibly kick up BPM's a titch we will have a dangerously amazing little LP on our hands. Excited to see what a next time bring's.
