14 Foot 1 - "Christ Grenades" [2007]

14 Foot 1 – “Christ Grenades” [2007]
Math-rock is the new punk.
14 Foot 1’s “Christ Grenades” is a super fun album.
Youthful, catchy, sloppy, life-affirming math for your ears.
These kids were dreaming big, and they actually managed to pull of some pretty rad moments.  The songs are kinetic and fun, and there is some electronic / overdubbed ear candy interspersed to spice things up.
These guys still play shows from time to time, and its rumored that a new album is on the way.  Stay tuned!

Strange Mangers - S/T (2011)

Kids these days.

Strange Mangers are a new-ish band of teenagers from Boston that includes a heavy dose of jangly guitar in their indie rock brew. The songs tend to be pensive and catchy. The rhythms aren't at all mathy, but there's so much jangly guitar, effective dynamics, and well-placed vocal harmonies that you'll forget everything is in 3/4 and 4/4. The vocals are sparse, airy, and strong.

The one iffy moment is a misguided sample-based piece about the financial crisis in the middle of the EP. It doesn't really add anything and kills the EP's momentum. But thats what skip buttons are for, I suppose.

Chon

Lets get something straight this isn't going to make you a better person, do your dishes or even push the boundaries of the the already crowded tech-metal genre. I can say though that this Ep by the extremely young band called Chon is very fun with some memorable breakdowns and melodies.  If not for that then do it because the drummer of this group is 12 years old. Yes like 6 plus 6 equals 12. According to the group he is not with them anymore because he wanted to do other activities like kids his age. It really is astonishing but deff. have a go.
