The Soft Greens - Ceiling (EP)

There's been some talk of Loose Lips Sink Ships on the fantasmagorical facebook arm of this fine musical blog....cough..cough.. Plenty of Swords (facebook edition)

Anyway's I promised to post an off shoot of LLSS from guitarist Conor Mackey called The Soft Greens. This is very much NOT math rock as if you couldn't latch onto that fact within the first .5 seconds. This is electronic dance pop albeit very Frankensteined.  Rhythmically at times this stuff gets super complex and wild with some deep breaks thrown in. Maybe if Aphex Twin had a 15 year old second cousin that was into max tundra? In any case it needs to be checked into. mark it.

Former Animals - Former Animals (2012)

Lets face it gang Math Rock is really all about those clean toned guitars cutting through each other.  This is less a rule of the genre and more of an issue of..shall we say...listen-ability.  Hear me out for a second.  With lazy production or the introduction of pedals to muddy your tone, your bracing new tribute spencer seim is going to sound confusing.

Why even bring this up? Well because Former Animals bring some interesting ideas to the table by way of atmospherics and guitar tone changes. At times shifts to the general "established" ideas of the "math rocking" just doesn't turn out so well. Tag on that fact that at many points it sounds like the train is about to derail and this sounds like it may not be very good.

SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH.

Because this train is filled with dancing bears and the tracks are constructed of marshmallows. When this train does go off track it somehow manages to still be fracking amazing...nay better. This is a pretty flawless release in my book. Dont see many of those around these days.

Occasionally jazzy and a bit punky maybe? interesting song structures, really inventive riffs and pretty proggy in spots. Wrap it up with a bow because this is some of the most interesting math rock I've run into so far this year.

The Season Standard - Squeeze Me Ahead of Line

German born Progressive monster right here.  The Season Standard issue forth heavy jazz, funk and electronic elements. Rhythms bring it in a math rock sort of bent but that shouldn't be of concern. Reason being that this is some excellently thoughtful musics that while technical retains its sense of fun.

production? clutch brah.

Trey Gunn also shows up on a track to play touch guitar. unfamiliar? he's just from some up and coming group called King Crimson.

Kinder - Archipielago (2012)

Last time on PLENTY OF SWORDS!

Hopefully this is a refresher for those reading and not the first encounter with these guys. Stripped of a lot of the more electronic elements, kinder rises above into a true math rock force of (positive) doom. They were headed in that direction before but its nice to see a band playing to their strength's. Keeping the keyboard was certainly a great idea for sure as well. Influences as per usually can be pointed to but its best just to enjoy this release on its own merits because they do cover a fair bit of ground. Both releases from these guys are excellent though so dont miss out!

Mental Architects - Celebrations (2012)

Trio from Bulgaria, jagged guitar lines, tight drumming and fat growling bass lines with some nice production values to give the heavy parts some real thump courtesy of Aaron Harris, drummer of Isis who produced and mixed the album. Celebrations is a nice mix of instrumental math rock and heavy post rock with plenty of dynamics, heavy grooves, and tricky rhythms to keep you engaged throughout. Think And So I Watch You From Afar (hereon out known as ASIWYFA), Maserati, Maybeshewill, BATS, etc.

I also threw in their prior EP, Patience, Communication, Understanding, Go, mixed and mastered by another great drummer, Chris Common of These Arms Are Snakes. Check this!

Sorne - "House of Stone" (2011)

Sorne is a laptop/vocals/percussion artist from Austin and gives me some mixed feelings.  I'm generally not a huge fan of bands that rely on laptops instead of guitars etc..  And at first listen Sorne sounded pretty identical to the hoards of pretentious 20-something white dudes with weird haircuts and laptops that have emerged in the last few years.

BUT after listening to this album a few times, it turns out that the songwriting is pretty darn good.  Shamanistic vocals snake through complex rhythms and odd time signatures, while backing vocals soar and pounding drums and electronics drive through tribal rhythms.  The overall effect is mystical and a little unsettling, but absolutely memorable.

The album is long.  It gets off to a slow start, and there are some dull moments.  But when things pick up, Sorne is totally satisfying, evoking Dirty Projectors / Bjork / Sting at his most tribal.

Sorne tours as a 3-piece (vocals/laptop and two fantastic drummers).  The 6-7 awesome songs on House of Stone plus their live show cements them as an act to keep your eye on, in my book.

House of Stone is available on Sorne's BANDCAMP fo' $free.99.

Alta - Places (2012)

Like a clean crisp lemonade in the hot summer air, post-hardcore (emphasis on the hardcore here) seems to really hit me hard in these months. Alta is the band that has been lighting up my life recently, and this is why. The cocktail mixture here is mostly post-hardcore as mentioned above with that harder edge going on with the vox. Mathy elements are certainly all over this band but its as integrated as any of its other portions. Really well done musics with a true care for songwriting progression. Emotional and very hard hitting. Post-rock vibes? you feeling them bro? yea you bet your bottom. Awesome four piece from Milwaukee, WI doing it right where many fail.

Haisuinonasa

A band seemingly at odds. Shifting from lulling atmospherics, glitch breaks to breakneck math rock and everything in between. Who better to provide this interesting amalgam then haisuinonasa a band hailing from our favorite island nation of precision math rock. Have to say when things get slow...I get sleepy with these guys. When the tempo gets ramped up you may not have a band that is this insanely tight again this year, staggering really.

The Cast of Cheers - Chariot (2010)

I personally guarantee after 3 listens of this album you will know all the lyrics, you'll be singing along to it at the top of your voice and you won't be able to stop yourself from dancing! An Irish four-piece, their debut Chariot smashed through the haze with its Foals/Battles-indebted blend of ferocious math-rock.

Ive been lucky enough to see these guys play a good few times in Dublin. Their live shows are phenomenal and full of energy. 'Enemies' have supported them a few times. Super nice guys!!

They have just released a new album three weeks ago on School Boy Error Records. Their new album was recorded/produced my non other than Luke Smith (who also produced Foals’ Total Life Forever).

This album was a free album only available in Ireland at the time but no longer available so definitely pick up a copy. This is rare.

75,000

Well, once again we have reached another milestone in Swords history: with your help, we have reached 75,000 views. Holy crapsickles. Who would have thought a few guys who like music would get so many people around the damn globe to check out the bands we dig. All of us at the Swords thank you for being a part of our fun. I feel some celebratory music is needed: track one from This is What Happens by Reign of Kindo, Thrill of the Fall, live:

Bonus points go to anyone who can name who the character is in the picture at the top, or where he came from (no cheating!).

Dusty Blade: Estradasphere- Buck Fever (2001)

Well, not enough people verified their knowledge of this bands existence when I popped the question on our facebooks page, so I feel obligated to introduce Estradasphere to those who may not know them. I remember when I first heard them, back in high school when I was mostly listening to a lot of metal and rap/rock crap. At the time, the most experimental band I had heard was Mr. Bungle, who I adored; California was instantly one of my favorite albums when I heard it, but one fateful night, Metaghost invited me over to hang out and play some GTA3, as well as to share some musics and eat some snacks. He was more than excited to show me Buck Fever: he was pretty much shitting his pants. He popped it on, and for the next hour we sat in awe, shitting our pants together.

Buck Fever is epic. The first thing you need to know about this album is the bands lineup. Although they were a 5 piece band at the time it was recorded, that says precious little about their sound: each of the five members were super-multi-instrumentalists. Were talking a minimal of 5-6 instruments each, with their sax player John Whooley tipping the scales at 20 (if you include the 7 different percussion instruments listed; I do). Their recording lineup for the album is here.

Their skills at song structures is next. The scope of their sound is only surpassed by the batshit insanity of their compositions: their songs go to so many different places, with a mastery of every genre you can think of, and the imagination to link their different sections together smoothly and flawlessly. Track five, Meteorite Showers, if I recall correctly, boasts 65 different styles through its 8 minutes. It is an overwhelming track, and more of a showoff of their skills and production than a cohesive "song", but it is crazy impressive nonetheless.

Unfortunately, it is pretty hard to find good recordings of them on the internet. They were too weird and undefinable to make any kind of waves, but Buck Fever stands tall as an achievement of insane skill and creativity that, with the help of Trey Spruance, made it to the presses with awesomely produced clarity. Their cover of the Mario Brothers 2 theme as a big band jazz piece rocks: it includes one of my favorite upright bass solos of all time. Buck Fever, the first song of the album, sets things up properly, with some Beach Boys styled melodramatics that quickly run amuck into rockabilly chase music before giving way to section after section of neatness. Millennium Child sits in the center of the album, 8 minutes of greatness with some of the sickest unison violin/ sax melodies I can think of. But what has always taken the cake for me is track six, The Bounty Hunter. Although it is more straightforward big band jazziness than a majority of the album, my god is it nasty. Do enjoy, ninjas.

Feuding Fathers

3 piece out of Austin, TX, I think they are friends with Boyfrndz. Sounds like Hella, Zach Hill, bygones, you get the idea. Vocals are just kinda there, drums are EVERYWHERE. There's 2 EPs on their bandcamp, this one has a bit better production value.

Alarmist - Alarmist EP (2011)

ALARMIST are an instrumental four-piece from Dublin, Ireland, formed in 2008.

All members are multi-instrumentalists, playing an equal role in bringing together the organic and electronic elements that form their sound. They build their songs from tightly wound melodies and frenetic rhythms, blending interlocking guitars, glitchy electronics, duelling percussion and rich wind arrangements.

Stockades - Demo (2012)

Stockades bring the Aussie calculations to the hearts and minds with this delicious demo. I don't remember demo's sounding this good...ever. Screamo style vox with some schizo tap a tap guitars under the influence of some math dance jam? Also theres a saxophone that pops up and makes the chill parts sound that much more jawsome. Problem only TWO SONGS! ok for now you get a pass stockades....for now.
