Oroboro - Demo (2016)

OroborO - Demo (2016)

Its been a bit since a three piece has really hit me with fantastically subtle instrumental math. A hard position to be in for sure to really stand out but I can safely say that after..many times through its clear that these are some real deal tunes.

Inspired and memorable guitar lines match up with occasional unexpected rhythms to really mold these three songs. The impressive aspect that keeps bringing me back in are the intelligent song structures and how the band plays with dynamics to keep things fresh and interesting. I can appreciate as well that no one instrumental (or all) are really trying to tap their way out of a cave or solo through heaven. Its a riff based affair that has a sort of 90's throw back vibe especially with some of the chordal choices and progressions but its a welcome vibe really and helps edge things into a warm nostalgic territory at times. Do yourself a favor and jump into this...

Tommy Boys - Demo

Look familiar?

Well it should. I briefly covered these cats back in January when they only had one song to speak of. I do think that they deserve a much deeper look as it is painfully obvious that these guys once something official gets dropped.....its going to be good times for all. The chops are there as well as the killer song writing. In need of a well placed and tight math rock turn? theres about 70 in every song. Forced? no not at all everything sounds fluid like a river and the riffs are pretty catchy as well. If your going to reach into the comparison's basket then you could say a more energetic and twisty Ghosts and Vodka with more of a punky vibe running through. For those that don't know Ghosts and Vodka, I suggest going to drink some vodka. Sound's like a damn fine combo if I've ever heard. They do now have a song with vocals and its just as excellent as the instrumental stuff. I need a bat signal or a beeper specifically for when new stuff by these guys comes out. I need it that badly.

No Metal in this Battle - Demo (2012)

Greetings a salutations Math heads I have been spending some quality time posting on the FANTASTIC math rock reddit page and highly recommend anyone unfamiliar to head over and give er a gander.

Any who No Metal in this Battle are a four piece that hail from Luxemburg. Their style is post rock in structure with the jazz and math butted up alongside. To be honest I was not crazy about the first song and while its perfectly serviceable for what it is....eh just not enough to put over the edge.

The second song on the demo however struck me square center with all the emotional and instrument power I need. So its worth the listen truly even just for the second song. I am interested in what direction these guys will go but for now I've been stuck on this song :)

We Scare Coyotes - PF Flyers (DEMO)

They must know my math rock weakness!?
Strings in math
its all over.

ok ok ok

Think a little old school mercury program with violin. But yes incredibly well structured post rock by way of mathy goodness. We Scare Coyotes are a five piece by way of Texas. What I am impressed the most with though is that we have:

1. A Demo
and
2. A LIVE Demo

and its just so good. Thankfully the violin isn't content to just sit back and solo but takes various rolls throughout a song.

Enough talking and reading. Go listen.

Sparhawks - Demo 2012

Some pretty refreshing instrumental post-rock musics going down. Mathy? eh not as much as id like but certainly some smatterings here and there.

Boston group Sparhawks have a familiar sound sure, but that doesn't take away from the fact that songs always have an incredible honesty. Not only that but its a lot of fun. Throw in some pretty sensational drumming moments and varied guitar atmosphere and thats a recipe for some solid ass rock music.

Like I said this is familiar territory for a lot of groups....but to see this young group succeeding on all cylinders makes me that much more excited to see whats in store for the full length. Good Stuff.

Taking Meds - Demo (2013)

A demo?
more like a declaration.
This music is god damn charming.
It enters the room like your best friend from 10 years ago, nary a step missed.
Of course with your favorite drink in hand.

Seriously insanely well developed alternative math pop. Is this popular? if not it should be on everyones watch list. A bit of a throw back to wonderful bands from math's more formative times during the 90's (Polvo, Archers of Loaf Ect.) but very much updated. Self assured vocals, dime drop turns @#$%RQTF!!
sorry
just listen to this
right now
now
its just that good
im done writing
I need to listen 12 more times.

Stockades - Demo (2012)

Stockades bring the Aussie calculations to the hearts and minds with this delicious demo. I don't remember demo's sounding this good...ever. Screamo style vox with some schizo tap a tap guitars under the influence of some math dance jam? Also theres a saxophone that pops up and makes the chill parts sound that much more jawsome. Problem only TWO SONGS! ok for now you get a pass stockades....for now.
