Steak and Cake Records

Hey guy/gal's just wanted to stop in and cast a light on some really wonderful music being created up north. A friend of mine (Brandon Schlia) runs a pretty boss record label in Buffalo NY called Steak and Cake Records. He's got a pretty wide base of groups and music featuring a lot of indie pop, alternative rock and some bent pop sensibilities.  Trust me that its worth the time to sit down and sift through whats going down. I understand that there isn't time shifting blah blah going down but props need to be dropped where its due. Heres a few things to get you started on your journey.

All of Them Witches

This is a long overdue post for me.  All of Them Witches are a duo hailing from Buffalo NY, which as it happens isn't too too far from my general living zone. Soundwise we are talking some tap-heavy guitar work that twists and turns, with complementary drumming that supports the guitars with just the right amount of technicality.

Math duos are always tricky for me to evaluate, since a lot of progressive music banks on how busy or full a composition can be, so obviously fewer performers can be detrimental. That said, Witches have a few things in their flavor to avoid being stale. Compositionally, there's great flow between sections in each song, avoiding the stunted transitions that trap many similiar groups. Overall, their sound smacks of a minimal nature while still sounding incredibly full. That might not make much sense on paper, but give it a listen and maybe it'll hit you.

I will be having the distinct pleasure of seeing them this Friday and have been looking forward to finally catching a show by them. Also looking forward to some possible new tunage? A boy can hope.

The Stay Lows - Signature Bridge

To find a decent post-rock band in my neck of the woods has seemingly been a tricky prospect. This 5 piece from Buffalo NY gives me exactly what I'm looking for in many ways. This isn't weepy explosions in the sky wait for it crescendo's but more consistent high's and low's. They play with math-rock a bit but mostly attempt to create interesting edgy post rock chamber pop. It could stand to be a little bit more of an individual in a crowded room and cello parts do help in this area but its mostly from a rhythmic stand point that some more thought should go in. Vocals do present themselves and are a welcome addition as well, more please. Atmospherically they actually do better than most. You get the feeling they are playing in some kind of dank cavern and thats always a cool thing.
